384 pp. Octavo, 8vo. Bound in green cloth with top edge gilt, gilt decorations on the spine and the front board, and beveled edges. Includes illustrations that show over 700 artifacts Dr. Schliemann excavated from Mycenae. The volume also includes eight plans, and twenty one plates (four of the plates are in color). The preface is written by the Hon. W.E. Gladstone. Dr. Schliemann was the first man to begin to excavate Hisarlik, the site which is believed to be where ancient Troy stood. Schliemann claimed to have discovered treasures and even the tomb of Agamemnon. Although experts disagree with him today, Dr. Heinrich Schliemann started the excavations and analyses of the most important sites of Bronze Age Greece. A handsome copy of this seminal work in classical archaeology. Some very minor loss to the corners of the boards, a bookplate from a previous owner with a tiny gift inscription dated 1878 (gift inscription is written on the bookplate) and a former owner's stamp on the bookplate, light wear to the extremities and a few small spots of mild discoloration.
