Marcuse was a philosopher in the same vein as Adorno and Horkheimer, and undertook studies on Marxism, Freud's theory, and the structure of society and social organization. The author wrote this book while lecturing on Soviet Marxism during the fifties. The book is an exploration of the intersection of Marxist and Freudian theories. Marcuse makes use of Freud's categories to provide "a critique of bourgeois society". In Eros and Civilization, Marcuse envisions a society in which "repressive tendencies are held in check and the possibilities for self-fulfillment are enhanced". The book was well-received by critics and it became a galvanizer for certain intellectual disciplines in the latter 1960's when revolt against establishment culture became mainstream. A nice copy of one of Marcuse's most significant works. Near Fine / Very Good. Item #000010335
