Volume 57 in the University of Oklahoma Press' series on the Civilization of the American Indian, a series which began publishing in 1932. Hyde's history tells the story of how a Brulé Sioux Chief, Spotted Tail, attempted to negotiate for the rights of his people in Washington D.C., while they were forced onto a reservation and manipulated to adopt the living habits of white farmers. Spotted Tail was assassinated by a political enemy, Crow Dog, and the U.S. Government seized the opportunity to subjugate the Brulé Sioux in the wake of Spotted Tail's assassination.
