A Year in Spain by a Young American

London: John Murray, 1831. First UK edition. Hardcover. 2 vol. 8vo. [5], vi-xi, [2], 2-413, [1] (page of publisher's advertisements); [5], vi-vii, [2], 2-377, [1] (page of publisher's advertisements), [2] pp. Mid-nineteenth century half calf over marbled boards, spines in six compartments, a green and a brown morocco label lettered in gilt on each spine. Volumes one and two are illustrated with a few in-text woodcuts. The woodcuts were taken from another work on Spain, some of the designs were done by Stothard. Alberich 1036. Oxford ANB, Philip McFarland, "Mackenzie, Alexander Slidell (06 April 1803–13 September 1848)". Palau V, p. 7. Slidell Mackenzie was a prolific author and avid traveler, and while he was in Spain he befriended Washington Irving and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He is best remembered for his decision to execute three men at sea after being informed of a possible mutiny aboard the ship. These volumes are his stories of his time in Spain, a light-hearted travel narrative. Very Good. Item #000012426
