Wraxall's novel portrays a family who decides to leave their English farm and sail to the United States, where they eventually head West to start new lives. Along the way they travel with a Black man (Daniel) and engage in hostilites with a few Indigenous Americans. However, Walter (the main character) and Daniel eventually befriend members of the Delaware Tribe and Daniel earns the nickname "Black Panther" from his friends in the tribe.
