Mr. Rabbit at Home; A Sequel to Little Mr. Thimblefinger and his Queer Country

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1895. First edition. Hardcover. Small 4to. [6], iv, [1], 6-304, [2] pp. Yellow publisher's cloth with gilt lettering and green, maroon, and yellow decoration on the front board, maroon lettering on the spine; all edges green. Blue endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with a frontispiece and with 24 plates (N.B. one of the plates contains a distasteful caricature of a young Black girl) by Oliver Herford. BAL 7132. One of several collections of Southern folktales that he published, Harris heard many of these folk tales from Black individuals during his early days working as a printer on a plantation. While his representation of the Old South is mixed, at times satirizing the oppressive institutions and attitudes of the region, and at times glossing over them, the themes and origins of these stories are still of interest to modern scholars. Near Very Good. Item #000012595
