London: Printed for T.N. Longman and O. Rees, 1801. Second edition. Hardcover. 2 vol. 8vo. [5], vi-xix, [1], 2-382, [2] (pages of publisher's advertisements), [2]; [3], iv-vii, [2], 2-377, [1]-3 (pages of publisher's advertisements), [2] pp. Contemporary mottled sheep, spine in six and a half compartments with two black morocco labels lettered in gilt on each spine. Volume one illustrated with a fold-out chart. Our set lacks the atlas of plates (the fold-out chart is the only illustration present). Blackmer 876. Ibrahim-Hilmy 79. Lowndes III 1725. In 1792 the author traveled to meet the Shah of Persia on behalf of the French government. Olivier was long-delayed and spent a few years in Egypt before voyaging for Persia in 1795. Along the way he visited Tehran, and what was then Arabia, Syria, and Mesopotamia. Olivier offers descriptions of Greece and the Greek islands, Constantinople, lower Egypt, Syria, and other locales which he visited during his multi-year trip. The French and English first editions and even this second edition in English are exceedingly uncommon in commerce. Very Good. Item #000012606
