The Story of a Cleveland School, from 1848 to 1881
Cambridge: John Wilson and Son, 1890. First edition. Hardcover. 8vo. [7], 8-376, [2] pp. Brown cloth with gilt lettering on the front board and spine. Case Western Reserve University, "Guilford, Linda (Lucinda) Thayer". Lucinda Guilford was a pioneering educator and worked especially hard to provide instruction to female students. She worked as a principal for multiple girls' private schools in Cleveland. One of the final chapters of this book includes a history of women's rights in the West, starting with ancient Rome and concluding at Guilford's present time. In her history Guilford includes a passage on the European witchcraft trials and medieval Christianity's discrimination against women. Guilford is quite positive on women's status in the United States, citing the amount of property women owned, and their membership and influence in Protestant churches. Guilford concludes with arguing for universal higher education for women. Very Good. Item #000012814
