The Flowery Kingdom and the Land of the Mikado or China, Japan and Corea containing their Complete History down to the Present Time ... Industries; Natural Scenery, Etc. Etc; Together with a Graphic Account of the War between China and Japan, its Causes, Land and Naval Battles, etc. etc.
Philadelphia: J.H. Moore Company, ca. 1895. Later edition. Hardcover. 4to. [2], iii-xvi, 17-608 pp. Blue-green publisher's cloth with decorations in blue, yellow, and black on the front board, decorations repeated in blind on the rear board, gilt lettering on the front board and spine; all edges marbled. Illustrated endpapers and pastedowns. Title page printed in red and black. Illustrated with a frontispiece and with several full-page engravings and phototype plates (all done in black and white). A chromolithograph presentation gift page precedes the frontispiece and title page. With an introduction by Hon. John Russell Young. No date on the title page, only a copyright date of 1894 with a different publisher assigned to the copyright, thus this is likely not the first edition of this work. Nevertheless it is an attractive publisher's binding, and the volume is profusely illustrated. The images present east Asian dress, urban and rural life, musicians, architecture, and so many features of China, Japan, and what was then Korea. Very Good. Item #000013351
Moderate rubbing to the boards' edges and corners, the rear hinge subtly repaired.
