[5], 4-628 pp. Brown cloth with borders in blind on each board, with the binder's stamp (U.S. Government Bindery) on the rear board, gilt lettering on the spine. Illustrated with two fold-out maps and a third folding map laid in the rear of the volume. With reports of the discoveries made by the U.S.S. Polaris, taken from the surviving members of the expedition. Naval History and Heritage Command, "Periwinkle". The Periwinkle was constructed in 1864 and saw action in the U.S. Civil War. After the war, the ship was selected for use by Charles F. Hall on his expedition to the Arctic in 1871. Sadly, on her return voyage the ship was crushed by icebergs. A portion of the crew was left stranded on floating ice but was later rescued by British sailors. The folding maps depict the knowledge that the Polaris survivors brought back. Very Good.
