Hardy, one of the most important and influential English mathematicians of the early twentieth century, is best known for his work in number theory and analysis. In spite of his avowed preference for pure mathematics, Hardy made a significant contribution to the science of population genetics (the Hardy-Weinberg principle). Hardy famously collaborated with John E. Littlewood and Srinivasa Ramanujan, the self-taught young Indian prodigy who Hardy mentored until his untimely death (several of these collaborations are contained in these two volumes).
