The authors of this book were journalists writing for the Los Angeles Times, and covered the riots as they happened. According to the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., the riots were fueled by high rates of unemployment for Black residents of L.A., the repeal of a California state law which previously forbade discrimination in housing, and a combined neighborhood density and social isolation that afflicted the Watts neighborhood.
