The photographs decorating this volume come from students at the Hampton Institute, an HBCU in Virginia, founded just after the U.S. Civil War. Several of the photographs depict Black Americans engaging in daily activities such as baking, riding horses, fishing, arranging flowers, playing music, etc. This volume is a stunning collaboration between Dunbar, a prominent and influential writer, and the widely collected graphic designer, Margaret Armstrong.
