Three quarter maroon morocco over marbled paper boards, boards ruled in gold, spines in six compartments, gold decorations and gold lettering on the spines; top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers and pastedowns, each volume with a silk ribbon bookmark bound in. Title pages done in red and black (although in volumes four through ten the second title page is done in black ink only). Printed on Ruisdael hand-made paper. The Paumanok edition, limited to three hundred sets, this set is numbered 204. Each volume is illustrated with a color frontispiece (several of which are portraits of Whitman), an engraved title page, and with three plates. Volume one contains Leaves of Grass, with a biography of the author. Volume two contains Leaves of Grass, as does volume three. Volume three also contains various readings, with first drafts of certain poems, rejected passages, and poems dropped by the way. Volume four marks the beginning of Whitman's various collected prose works in the set. Issued under the editorial supervision of his literary executors, Richard Maurice Bucke, Thomas B. Harned, and Horace L. Traubel. With additional bibliographical and critical material prepared by Oscar Lovell Triggs, Ph.D. BAL 21454. Myerson B4.
