An attractive example of the author's first novel, which follows the story of a group of U.S. Army infantrymen stationed in Hawaii during the period leading up to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The novel won the National Book Award and is part of the Modern Library 100. The book was also the basis for the extraordinarily popular 1953 film of the same name which won eight Academy Awards.
