Trajecti Batavorum [= Utrecht]: Guilielmi Broedelet, 1714. First edition. Hardcover. 2 vol. (bound in one). 4to. [13], 4-511, [6], 516-1068, [94] pp. Contemporary full parchment with a brown leather label lettered in gilt on the spine; all edges decoratively done in red. Illustrated with an engraved title page, eight plates (six of which are maps), and six folding plates (three of which are maps, one is a large genealogical chart). Several in-text engravings and a few engraved initials (ancient coins are depicted in the in-text engravings). All maps and illustrations done in black and white. Lacks the portrait of Reland. Each title page with the publisher's device engraved on it. Title pages printed in red and black. Text mostly in Latin, with a few phrases in Hebrew, Arabic, and Greek. Blackmer 280. Brunet 55. Graesse 75. Rohricht 296. Reland relied on other scholars for his information regarding Palestine, as he never visited the region himself. He cites Greek and Roman sources as well as early Christian authors for this treatise. This was one of his final publications. Palestine's topography, wildlife, geography, and culture are explored in this work. Reland's contemporaries praised this book heavily, and it was reprinted in 1716. A pleasing copy of this beautifully illustrated history of Palestine. Very Good. Item #000015649
