Marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Volume one illustrated with a folding map as a frontispiece and with a few plates (all in black and white), volume two with a few plates. The British Museum "Joachim John Monteiro". The author was an engineer, naturalist, zoologist, and explorer. He moved to Angola in 1858 and remained there until two years before his death. This publication is one of the earliest done on Angola's culture and on its flora and fauna. Several of the objects depicted in the plates of this book made their way to the British Museum. His wife Rose carried on their work in Mozambique after Monteiro's death. Very Good or better. Item #000016205
