According to Potter our jacket is the first state, our book has the error Potter calls for on line 31 of page 213, for the book's first state, but there is only one blank leaf in the front of our book and no blank leaves in the rear. Inscribed by Dos Passos on the free front endpaper: "For J.A. Van Nordall, Cordially, John Dos Passos. This book was begun in Paris in the spring of 1919, and worked on in Spain and finished - New York in 1920". It is difficult to find earlier state copies of this book signed.
