Lewins was an army surgeon and physician, as well as a philosopher. He is most famous for his work on Hylo-Zoism or Hylo-Idealism, a philosophy of mind he developed with his close friend Constance Nadel. Lewins advocated for a secular and materialist view of human consciousness and the mind and argued that humans experience a purely physical world through their consciousness which comes from the brain. A stirring idea for the Victorian age, contradicting the idea of a spiritual or immaterial soul as the basis for human consciousness and experience. An early example of physicalism in the philosophy of mind. Near Fine. Item #000017122
The paper label soiled, a contemporary bookplate on the front pastedown.
