Stanford, The Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute, "Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?". A beautiful copy of King's fourth book, the final one that he published during his lifetime. This volume is King's reflection on what he deemed "the first phase of the American Civil Rights movement" (from 1957 to '67). He discusses the significance of the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act, and contemplates what the next phase of the Civil Rights movement should look like. He postulates that the next step ought to be a continued fight for better jobs, education, and living situations for Black people in the United States. In the book he states that racism is so deeply engrained in American society that there would be continued pushback from white Americans while Black citizens fight for equality over the next decade. The second chapter of the book is King's response to the Black Power movement, and provides important primary source material for understanding how the Reverend felt and thought about the different ways of approaching justice for Black Americans.
