New York: E.P Dutton , 1978. First printing. Hardcover. 185 pp. Price of $7.95 on front flap of jacket. Inscribed and with an illustration by the author on the free front endpaper. Winner of the Newbery Medal, an inventive and entertaining mystery. Inscribed to the author's dear friend Susan Glazer, a former professor of Rider University in New Jersey. Dr. Glazer was an important advocate for children's literacy, and worked in her community and around the world to promote it. The inscription includes a self-caricature of the author dressed as a pageant winner with a sash that says "Miss Newbery" and a Newbery sticker as the head of the figure's wand. The entire page wonderfully demonstrates Raskin's graphic design skill. In the postscript note of the inscription the author remarks that the book is one of the first off the press (presumably received by her directly from the publisher prior to the official publication date). A beautiful and unique association copy of this classic children's mystery, scarce signed and in collectible condition. Fine / very near Fine. Item #00006629
A Fine book in a very near Fine jacket with some mild age toning to the tops of the panels.
