Frontispiece with tissue guard in each volume, numerous maps and illustrations, the fold-out map and facsimile of the the terms of Lee's surrender in volume two are both intact. Grant completed work on his memoirs shortly before his death in 1885. The books were published by Mark Twain and his nephew Chales Webster (co-owners of Charles L.
