Scudder) pp. Green cloth lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine and front board. Illustrated by a frontispiece, eight coloured plates beautifully illustrating the different species of butterflies discussed by Scudder, and by additional black and white illustrations. Scudder published prolifically during his lifetime, with over one-hundred papers and books on American zoology. His work on insects, fossils, and snails contributed greatly to zoology and its science in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Scudder was a librarian at Harvard and the President of the Boston Society of Natural History ("Samuel Hubbard Scudder: A Biographical Memoir", Alfred Goldsborough Mayor, National Academy of Sciences).
