Scudder published prolifically during his lifetime, with over one-hundred papers and books on American zoology. His work on insects, fossils, and snails contributed greatly to zoology and its science in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Scudder was a librarian at Harvard and the President of the Boston Society of Natural History ("Samuel Hubbard Scudder: A Biographical Memoir", Alfred Goldsborough Mayor, National Academy of Sciences).
