Gilt decoration of a ship on the front board, gilt lettering on the spine. Illustrated with a frontispiece, in-text wood engravings, and several plates, with some images taken from the work of Cruikshank, H.K. Browne, J.R. Wells, and Thomas Stothard. Here Robinson gives a comprehensive history of the British Navy, starting from its origins and the dawn of the Sea Powers of Europe, covering its flags and signals, the history of the Admiralty, the equipment and rations of the fleet, naval laws and customs, the evolution of the battleship, famous naval officers and sailors, and what was then "the Navy to-day". Commander Robinson was a Naval Correspondent for forty-three years and retired from the British Navy in 1882. Laid in the volume is an obituary for Robinson (who died in 1927) dated September 19, 1936. Very Good. Item #00009118
