The Story of the Catacombs

Cincinnati: Jennings and Graham [1909], 1909. First edition. Hardcover. 8vo. [8], 9-148 pp. Green cloth with gold lettering on the front board and spine; top edge gilt. Illustrated by a chromolithograph frontispiece of the Appian Way and six additional photograph plates. The illustrations depict the ruins of the Roman forum (as seen at the turn of the century), the ruins of Nero's palace, a photograph of the Roman Catacombs, and graves of the early Popes buried at the Catacombs. The chapters discuss Christian Biblical history as it relates to the Roman catacombs: prominent Christians buried there, and how Christianity came to Rome. However, the author also outlines a brief history of the rediscovery of the catacombs, and the nineteenth-century archaeology conducted to investigate them. Very Good. Item #00009120

A Very Good book with hints of wear to the cloth and a contemporary name to front flyleaf.
