This publication by Sendak experienced heavy censorship, book burning, and banning. Librarians and parents were upset by Mickey, the protagonist, being depicted in the nude. Librarians would draw diapers over the pictures, some schools banned the book, and some even went as far as burning the book. Even today it remains controversial, and is ranked 25th on the "100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000" list compiled by the American Library Association.
