Before Heath, little work had been done on Greek mathematics prior to Euclid. Heath was a pre-eminent classicist and helped to edit the ninth edition of Liddell and Scott's Greek-English Lexicon, adding several Greek mathematical terms to it. Heath was working on translating mathematical content in Aristotle's writings when he died. His wife, Sir David Ross, and Ivor Thomas helped to edit and complete the book for publication.
