A history of the Ninth and Tenth Cavalry Regiments: U.S. Army units composed of Black soldiers who fought in the U.S. Civil War, who then went on to fight Native Americans on the Great Plains during the twenty years after the Civil War. The regiments were commanded by white officers and faced several disadvantages thanks to racism in the upper ranks of the United States Army and racism in the frontier towns in which the regiments operated. Leckie's book tells the story of the forgotten Black men who served in the army during the late nineteenth century, and the story of how Black and Indigenous Americans were forced into brutal conflict on the Western frontier.
