Albert Bigelow Paine was Mark Twain's literary executor and wrote a famous three-volume biography of Twain's life and times. Paine had a very close and personal relationship with the author, as he moved his family into Twain's home in 1906. He helped conduct Jean Clemens' funeral, and cared for Samuel Clemens during his final illness. He helped manage the Clemens' estate and the day-to-day work of the household. Paine's writings greatly shaped the public's understanding of Twain's character and how it changed throughout his life. His editorial work on Twain's notebooks in this volume was one of his last major literary publications, completed just two years before he died. These writings give the reader a sense of Clemens' literary creativity and creative process. Twain's signature humor and literary style shine brightly in his private writings, a fascinating book illuminating the personal side of Mark Twain. Near Fine / Very Good. Item #00009809
